The Types of Injuries Most Commonly Suffered in Car Crashes
When you’re traveling in a motor vehicle of any kind, whether it’s a subcompact car to a pickup truck, any impact with another vehicle has the potential to cause serious bodily injury. Here are some of the most common types of ailments or physical trauma people experience in a motor vehicle accident:
- Whiplash—Probably the most common consequence of a car or truck wreck, whiplash can occur even in situations where the impact was almost negligible. Whiplash happens when your head snaps violently one way, then back the other. It rarely results in broken bones, but typically caused micro-tears in muscle, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissue. It can take days or weeks to fully manifest and a long time to heal. Whiplash most often causes substantial inflammation and pain in your neck and shoulders.
- Head injury—There are many surfaces inside a car with which your head can collide as the result of a collision. Even though your brain is well-protected by your skull, you can experience significant trauma from the impact, as it can hurt your brain violently against your skull, leading to inflammation or even brain injury.
- Herniated disc—As a result of the impact of a crash, the vertebrae in your back can shift out of place or even rupture. When that happens, the soft matter in the center of your disc can bulge out, impinging on nearby nerves or other body parts, causing significant discomfort.
