Exercises to Strengthen Neck Muscles
If you have suffered any type of injury to your neck, whether it’s the result of trauma or a consequence of repetitive stress or motion, you want to take concrete steps toward getting healthy. Unfortunately, most treatment approaches simply seek to mask the pain with medication. That’s not the case with chiropractic. A chiropractor can show you specific exercises to strengthen your neck and to improve flexibility and range of motion.
There are neck exercises that can be done while standing, while sitting or even while lying down. That’s good news, as it means you can work on improving your health, regardless of where you are, whether you’re a passenger in a car, sitting at home or waiting for a ride. Before you engage in any type of exercise program that involves your neck, though, you want to consult with your own personal chiropractor.
A Simple Stretch to Loosen Your Trapezius Muscles
One of the muscles most commonly affected in the neck is the trapezius, or trap, muscle, which fans out from the middle of the back to the base of your skull. When you shrug your shoulders, you are using your trapezius muscles. When those muscles experience trauma or get tight, any movement of your head or neck can cause pain.
A simple stretch to promote loosening or relaxation of the trapezius muscle is the head tilt. This exercise can be done sitting, standing or lying on your back. Turn your head in one direction and tip your ear in the direction of the opposite shoulder—for example, tip your right ear in the direction of your left shoulder. Don’t force anything—only go as far as you can without pain. Then use your hand to pull that shoulder toward your ear. Hold it for 10-15 seconds. Then do the same exercise from the other side.
